Things to consider when moving assessments online

WISEflow’s automated proctoring via student web cameras provides additional monitoring during remote locked down assessments (*Available from 2nd April

Our automated proctoring feature can monitor students through webcam snapshots. These snapshots are used to analyse the person’s identity throughout the exam. Automated proctoring makes it possible to continue with planned closed book exams in a remote and distributed environment where students complete their assessments using their own device.

WISEflow can be accessed from all over the world. All that is required is an internet connection

The fact that WISEflow can be accessed from all over the world makes it easier for institutions to find alternative ways to test their students when onsite assessments are not possible. Any device* with a web browser and an internet connection can be used to access WISEflow to complete assessments.

* Use of the lockdown browser requires Mac, Windows or iPad.

There are no specific requirements to the type of internet connection that students use to access WISEflow

If students have a suitable device and internet connection, they can log in to WISEflow and access their assessments. There is no requirement to use institutionally provided networks, which makes it easy to conduct assessments remotely.

Both open book and locked assessments can be completed remotely in WISEflow

All of the different flow types in WISEflow can be completed remotely. This provides institutions with a range of options when exploring alternatives to onsite assessment. Open book assessments can be conducted by using FLOWassign, FLOWhandin or FLOWmulti, and locked assessments with/without automated proctoring can be conducted by using FLOWlock and FLOWmulti with lock.

WISEflow provides tools for real-time monitoring of assessment activity and the ability to send messages directly to students whilst they are completing their assessments

Through the use of the FLOWmonitor in WISEflow, assessments can be monitored in real time. This feature can be used to monitor both on-site and remote assessments. Through the FLOWmonitor, flow managers and invigilators can send direct messages to students during the running of an assessment.

Students can access ‘demo flows’ at any time in WISEflow to experience the different flow types before they attempt a real assessment

The importance for students to have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with WISEflow prior to accessing their first real assessment should not be underestimated. Students are far less likely to encounter difficulties if they have been provided with the chance to orientate themselves in the system. Students can access demo flows in WISEflow at any time.

In addition to our demo flows, we recommend any familiarisation activity be contextualised as much as is possible, for example by using the same format, structure and characteristics of their real assessment. Creating a ‘practice flow’ that students can access can help to ensure the smooth running of subsequent real assessments.

Create master flow templates

Consider creating ‘master flows’ that you can use as the basis for other flows using the ‘copy flow’ feature. When you copy a flow, you can include associated users (students, authors, invigilators, managers, assessors and reviewers), the assignment of authors and reviewers to students, flow settings, flow dates and attached content such as assignments, additional material and external resources.

The use of master flow templates can save time for those who are faced with creating a large number of assessments in a short space of time.
