Universidade Aberta (UAb) is now rolling out WISEflow Originality across its student population of 17,000 - making it the first institution in Portugal to partner with UNIwise on a full Originality deployment.
UAb's relationship with WISEflow goes back to 2022, when the university began trialling the platform as part of a broader shift toward digital assessment. The expansion to WISEflow Originality is the next chapter in that story - and a natural one. As Bruno Tavares, Coordinator of the Technological Support Service for Teaching at UAb, put it when the initial WISEflow contract was announced: "The presence of WISEflow at Universidade Aberta not only eases the consolidation of digital assessments, but also reinforces trust in academic integrity."
WHY Originality - AND WHY NOW
UAb is a public distance-learning institution, fully online since 2008, built for learners wherever they are. That model is exactly where the challenge of academic integrity becomes most acute.
Traditional plagiarism tools catch direct copying. WISEflow Originality goes further. Using semantic similarity to surface paraphrased and AI-assisted content that simple text matching misses. Originality is a flexible set-up that can be integrated with wiseflow and it can also work independently.
This is UNIwise's first full Originality partnership in Portugal - a market where open and distance learning has a strong tradition, and where the integrity challenges that come with remote assessment are felt keenly. For UNIwise, it signals that the conversation around AI-assisted misconduct is moving from discussion to action across Europe, and that institutions are ready to go beyond legacy tools.
If you're at a Portuguese institution working through the same questions, we'd be glad to talk.
