UNIwise now supporting Learning Tools Interoperability to bring seamless LMS and VLE integrations to European higher education

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)® is a standard developed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium and specifies a way to integrate learning applications, often provided by third-party vendors, with platforms like Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard.

WISEflow and LTI support

We are happy to announce that WISEflow now supports LTI v1.3, whereby compatible platforms can utilise WISEflow as a tool on courses and tests. Setting up an LTI integration enables seamless connection between WISEflow and your virtual learning environments.

Digital platforms have become integral to the ecosystem of educational institutions, enhancing the learning experience, streamlining administrative tasks, and fostering better communication. Providing support for LTI, educational institutions will have the ability to connect WISEflow as their main exam platform with other learning management systems. This places WISEflow directly in the ecosystem of existing virtual learning experiences.

WISEflow is the optimal system for carrying out summative exams and has a large range of different flow types catering for the different variants of exams needed by institutions in higher education. Introducing students to WISEflow and embedding WISEflow into their day-to-day course work nowadays can be a fairly labour-intensive manual task or depend on custom built integrations.

Setting up and managing flows in WISEflow can also be a complex task, which can lead to teachers not harnessing the true potential of WISEflow in their course design. By adding support for LTI in WISEflow, users gain multiple benefits that can only be achieved by connecting the two solutions.

First steps: Canvas partnership and LMS integration

As a first step, it will be possible to set up an integration between WISEflow and Canvas. UNIwise is an official Canvas partner, allowing both WISEflow and Canvas to facilitate further enrichment of teaching and learning through technology. UNIwise can be found, alongside some additional information, on the official Canvas partnership Listings, and we see this seamless Canvas integration as a huge step in continuing to bring high-quality, deeply beneficial digital assessment solutions to European higher education.

The integration between WISEflow and Canvas will allow assessors and/or managers to easily link flows to courses in the LMS and for users (assessors, managers and participants) to navigate directly to the specific flow in WISEflow from the LMS. This will create secure and standardised communication between the virtual learning platform (LMS) and exam platform (WISEflow), thus improving the user experience and developing faster, easier and safer solutions.

Looking ahead: expansion to more platforms

In the coming months, the LTI integration will be built out further to support connections to platforms such as Moodle, Brightspace and Blackboard. Additionally, development will focus on reducing administrative work, like passing back grades from WISEflow via the LTI or reducing the amount of work associated with setting up and managing flows.
